An isolated and lonely old man in the mountains tries to save Sohrab’s, his son, life. But, despite of all his efforts, he cannot change the son’s death sentence and Sohrab is executed. So he takes the body of his son through the mountain and rivers, baptizing him. Meanwhile, the old man also should take care of his grandson.

Stefan, a migrant construction worker living in Brussels, is planning a trip home to his mother in Romania. In preparing for his voyage, he reconnects with local family members over gifted bowls of homemade soup, interacts with strangers, and discovers a revivifying commune with nature. This leads him to an unexpected connection with Shuxiu, a Chinese-Belgian bryologist studying the local moss.

An odyssey through time and memory, centered on a place in New Jersey where—from wilderness, and then, later, from a home—love, loss, struggle, hope and legacy play out between couples and families over generations.
